Katina, a slave to a shaman and her apprentice by mercy, wants nothing more than to become a shaman, herself. Sensitive to spirits and gifted with a peculiar ability of finding her way to anything she desires, she has ample potential for the role. But when the son of her mistress dies, Katina is charged with finding Tuoni, the Lord of the Dead, who has gone missing yet possesses the power to resurrect the young man. With her apprenticeship--her only means for future security and power--on the line, Katina is pressed to obey, lest her mistress turn her out to the highest bidder.

On her way, Katina encounters Osvanek, an enigmatic flute player of otherworldly talent, who insists her quest is futile and convinces her to give it up in exchange for gifts of comfort and wealth. As Katina's irate mistress abandons her despite the riches, Osvanek rushes to her rescue and even teaches her to wield his supernatural music to increase her power. Though appreciative of his generosity, Katina can’t help but doubt his motives, and as her wayfinding gift binds her to discovering the mystery of Tuoni’s disappearance, Osvanek, who is steadily stealing her heart, grows equally adamant to stop her--and for reasons far more ominous than keeping her safe. In searching for the god, Katina will risk her dreams, love, and, very possibly, her life.

For fans of Nettle and Bone, Wild Reverence, and The Bear and the Nightingale, THE OTHER SHORE is set in the mystical, untamed 900s Finnic lands, a realm of warriors and fur traders, Saami nomads, and unpredictable spirits--a land where curses can destroy the soul and cold the body, and where freedom can be snatched away by the tip of a spear.
